Poster for Boots

A coming-of-age military dramedy set in 1990, where fitting in is the hardest test of all. Boots follows a young man searching for direction in life, only to find himself inside a system designed to strip people down before building them back up.

He Said / She Said

SHE SAID
7.8 / 10

“I don’t normally prefer military-themed shows so I didn’t expect to like this one, but I did. Cameron’s inner voice adds humor and heart, and watching his growth makes the tough moments worth it. The humiliation can be intense, and the music sometimes pulled me out of scenes, but overall I found it endearing and surprisingly funny. I would have rated it higher but I don’t have the stomach for that level of bullying.”

HE SAID
7.8 / 10

“The perseverance and sense of brotherhood really worked for me. The characters are interesting, and the 1990 setting adds texture. At times it’s hard to tell characters apart (they all have the same shaved heads), but the show does a good job pulling you in and making you want to keep watching.”

Critical reception (so far)

Early reviews praise the show’s character-driven storytelling, emotional depth, and balance of drama and humor, with some noting occasional tonal unevenness.

What it’s about

Set during a time when being openly gay in the U.S. military was illegal, Boots centers on Cameron: a young man who feels lost after a difficult adolescence and joins the Marines hoping to find structure, purpose, and a place to belong.

The show explores the physical and emotional realities of boot camp while balancing harsh training, personal identity, and moments of humor that reveal what Cameron is really thinking beneath the surface.

Overall vibe

This is a dramedy at heart: dramatic and often uncomfortable, but softened by character-driven humor. The tone stays consistent across episodes, using lighter moments to offset a world built on pressure, discipline, and emotional isolation.

The pacing is steady and binge-friendly, with each episode deepening the characters and the dynamics inside boot camp.
