The Middle
Review Scores (how we rate) Watch trailer →
The Middle follows the Heck family, a financially stretched, wildly imperfect household in small-town Indiana trying to survive everyday life without losing their minds.
He Said / She Said
“This show is like finding a forgotten $20 in your winter coat. Unexpected, comforting, and immediately improves your mood. It’s chaotic in the best way, like a pile of mismatched leftovers that somehow turns into the perfect meal.
Sue alone deserves her own award for relentless optimism. I would watch her fail at things forever. This show is funny, warm, relatable, and just the right amount of ‘wow at least my life is not that stressful.’ I’m sad that I’ve watched it all but will most likely watch it again. The episodes are fast, easy to watch, and make for great background noise or company if you just want to put something on without having to think about what to watch, especially if it’s your 2nd or 3rd time watching it!”
“It feels like a more grounded version of a wacky family sitcom. The characters are exaggerated but still believable, which is harder to pull off than it looks.
Brick is the quiet MVP here. Completely odd, completely ignored, and somehow the most self aware person in the room. The show is easy to watch, easy to rewatch, and surprisingly consistent.”
Critical reception (so far)
- “A refreshingly honest take on family life”
- “Relatable, messy, and consistently funny”
- “A sitcom that works without a laugh track”
What it’s about
The Heck family navigates work, school, money problems, and daily chaos in small-town Indiana. Each family member lives in their own extreme personality lane, and somehow it all holds together.
It is less about big story arcs and more about the small, painfully relatable moments that make up everyday life. There’s something for everyone to relate to, regardless of age.
Overall vibe
Warm, chaotic, and quietly hilarious. It feels like a real family turned up just enough to make you laugh without losing the truth underneath.
It is the kind of show you throw on for one episode and accidentally watch three.
Episode-by-episode (1–3)
We meet the Heck family and immediately understand the chaos. Frankie is overwhelmed, Mike is quiet, and the kids are all wildly different.
Money stress kicks in hard for Frankie and Mike, while Sue keeps trying and failing with unstoppable optimism, Axl gets a creative punishment, and Brick is dismayed to lose his library card for overdue fines.
Frankie and Mike attempt to celebrate their anniversary while everything else falls apart around them in classic Heck fashion.
